The Scoop on DiSC® Assessments

The WHAT

The DiSC® personal assessment tool provides a common language to help people understand themselves and the people with whom they interact. Every year, more than one million people utilize this easily accessible, simple-to-use tool to enhance a multitude of work and life-related areas, including teamwork, communication, conflict management, relationships, and workplace productivity.

The DiSC® model uses four personality profiles, each represented in the acronym.

D = Dominance – characterized by a tendency to be confident and emphasize accomplishing bottom-line results.

i = Influence – described as people who tend to be more open and emphasize relationships and influencing or persuading others.

S = Steadiness – characterized as those who tend to be dependable and emphasize cooperation and sincerity.

C = Conscientiousness – these folks tend to emphasize quality, accuracy, expertise, and competency.

Thousands of organizations, from home-grown businesses to non-profits to government agencies and everything in between, have benefited from the knowledge this model delivers. Simply put: DiSC® assessments result in stronger, more effective work and life relationships.

HOW does it work?

Testing with DiSC® couldn't be easier. The assessment is available online, free of charge, and takes no more than 15 minutes to complete. Testers simply answer a series of questions about their behavior, using an adaptive testing system and a scale that ranges from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The assessment is easy for employers to administer to employees or job applicants. Relax, there are no "right" or "wrong" answers.

And finally, the WHY. Why bother with DiSC® assessments?

Because this simple-to-use tool will help you create a workplace environment that brings out the best in your employees, teams will flourish with the right mix of personalities. Camaraderie will grow as conflicts and misunderstandings diminish. Think greater engagement, ramped up productivity, and a more cohesive workforce.

When you're aware of your employees' strengths and weaknesses, that knowledge will guide you toward the most effective motivational tools. It will give a yay or nay toward specific performance-enhancing tactics. It will help you establish a culture that supports your business goals.

DiSC® assessment results can provide valuable insights when choosing between similarly skilled job candidates. Knowing the personality profiles of those in the department where the open position exists, as well as that of the prospective candidates, can inform "right fit" hiring decisions.

As people understand themselves better, they will recognize how to inspire and motivate themselves. Choosing how best to nurture their strengths and shore up their weaknesses will be easier. They will feel equipped to be their own greatest asset rather than their own worst enemy.

While DiSC® assessments can be a valuable tool in the hiring department, Jon Sammons, Director of LeaderStat's Premier division that focuses on retained search and interim executives, reminds us, "Assessments don't always identify every strength or weakness of a candidate or team member. But they can help build stronger, more effective working relationships."

As part of an ongoing effort to build a dynamic workforce and strengthen your team's cohesiveness, the DiSC® model of personal assessments can play a pivotal role and help you make smarter hiring decisions.
