Celebrating Careers in Aging Month in March 2024

As the older adult population in the United States grows year over year, the demand for healthcare professionals in long-term care is also increasing. But this isn't unique to the U.S.  According to the World Population Prospects Report in 2022, the global population above 65 years old is projected to double by 2050, equating to about 1.6 billion older adults.

Careers in Aging Month is dedicated to highlighting the vast opportunities available to professionals who have a passion for serving the older adult population, including disciplines such as long-term care management and administration, research, dietary planning, dining services and hospitality, social work, advocacy and more. The theme of Careers in Aging Month 2024 is "Passion, Purpose, Possibilities."

Careers and Specializations
Each week in March, Gerontological Society of America (GSA) will highlight specific career journeys and unique opportunities related to aging:

  • Week one will focus on careers in healthcare, from small practices to hospitals to long-term care facilities and provide examples of positions in these types of settings, including social workers and geriatric occupational therapists (OT).
  • Week two explores a more behind-the-scenes career path -- research and advocacy, including lists of organizations who provide advocacy and support services for older adults on a national level.
  • Week three will highlight a mix of business and entrepreneurship opportunities available, including construction management, architecture, beauty and style services, fitness and wellness, and more. Learn more from the Exploring Careers in Aging Career Catalog.
  • The final week of Careers in Aging Month is dedicated to home-based services and careers in senior living, such as home-delivered meals, transportation, case work, and those who provide direct care in assisted living or nursing home centers.
