Tips for Getting Your Next Job Promotion

Written by LS Admin | Aug 24, 2018

TIME TO MOVE ON

At some point most of us will decide it’s time to move on, or move up from our current position, even if it’s one we enjoy; taking on new challenges and responsibilities helps us grow professionally and personally. If it’s time for you to pursue a job promotion, we’d like to help you achieve it with some tips.

BE THE JOB

This should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyways - it is vital to excel in your current position. Work hard, be invested in the organization, and emulate the habits of the most successful individuals in the senior living industry. Keep track of measurable achievements, update your resume, and make sure your supervisor is aware of your accomplishments.

MIND THE GAP

Ideally, every healthcare industry professional should approach their career progression in a planned, deliberate way rather than a seemingly random series of job hops. However, ideal conditions are rare and if your job history isn’t as smooth as you’d like, or if there are gaps in your work history or experience – address them. Be able to explain periods of unemployment or positions that didn’t last long in a way that does not question you or your former employer. If there is a gap in your experience, seek out a project that closes it.

ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS ASK

Employers rarely offer advancement opportunities out of the blue. It’s important to make sure your manager/employer is aware of your professional interests. Discuss your long-term goals and get his/her advice about how to achieve them.

IT’S NOT ME IT’S YOU

Focus discussions on what you can contribute in the new role, why you will be successful there, and how you will improve the organization. Tell them what you bring to the table rather than telling them what you need. Do not approach the promotion as if you are entitled to it, or owed it for past contributions.
